Doll Chit Chat Member Exclusive!
An interview with doll collector & new doll maker KarenC.
Hello Karen and thank-you for taking part in our exclusive new part of the newsletter.

Firstly as Doll Chit Chats highest poster why are you so passionate about dolls?
I have always loved dolls, baby dolls in particular. When I was a little girl, I always had a life-sized baby doll as # 1 on my wishing list, but I never had any, because I already had a "fine" doll with curly (artificial) hair who could open and close her blue eyes - a doll that I hated because she prevented me from having the baby doll that I wanted so much! Mathilde remained nameless for 53 years and only got her name last year although she has been with me since I was 3 years old!
Who are your favorite doll artists?
My favourite doll artists are Carol Audis and Janet Paulger of Lullabydolls - I am and will always be a Lullaby addict and have just had my Lullabydolls # 19 and # 20, namely Kristine (Kristie by Janet Paulger) and Magnus (Piers by Carol Audis) and they will definitely not be my last Lullabydolls!

What is the most rewarding part of your hobby?
It is hard to say, but I think that the most rewarding part of my hobby is the wonderful friends that I have found thanks to my hobby and to Doll Chit Chat - and DCC itself, of course, otherwise I would not have been DCCs highest poster - I love DCC and consider the forum to be my second home"!

How long have you been a doll collector?
I have been a doll collector since 2005, but had I known what I know today, I'd have always been a doll collector.

What have you learnt since you started collecting?
I discovered a wonderful doll world filled with people having the same passion and love for dolls as I have - a world that was completely new to me! Thanks to DCC, I learnt a lot about dolls, doll types, mediums, artists, and techniques.

What made you decide to start making your own dolls?
After sculpting various items for my dollhouses (another passion of mine), including a number of character dolls, some of my friends in DCC encouraged me to start sculpting baby dolls too and helped me with a lot of good advice and ideas! - Last November, I started my first sculpting attempt and a few days later, I got a letter of notice from my employer after having been in their service for more than 34 years! The company had to reduce the staff by 1000 persons worldwide, of which the 21 at the head-office where I was working, so sculpting dolls came into my life at a very appropriate time, I must say! I love sculpting and have got an awful lot to learn and I try to work with various expressions and moods, which i find very exciting.

What is your favorite medium?
I love OOAKs because each and every doll is unique - the artist has put all her/his feelings, emotions, dreams and endeavours into making the doll, but when that has been said, I love silicones too because they feel so real!

What reaction do you get from family and friends?
Most of my friends love to come and see and hold my dolls but with my family things are different! Only my 76-year old brother loves to see my dolls and sees them as little pieces of art. He asks for them if I haven't posed any in the sitting room and he has asked me to take pictures of him cuddling them! My husband is very supportive and also encourages my sculpting. My sons and daughters-in-law more or less ignore them and so do my sisters. Other family members may think that I have lost the plot, and I've even "lost" the friendship with one of my sisters-in-law due to my passion for dolls, but I'd rather live without her friendship than live without my dolls!

If you could have any doll in the world who would it be?
OOAK Sashii by Janet Paulger - I love and adore character dolls!

Where do you see your doll collection in 10 years time?
In 10 years' time, I will still collect baby dolls. However, I dare not imagine how big my collection may be!
Have a great March Everyone!
